1862 May 31

To day has been the most sultry day of the
year. Early in the afternoon, we were star-
-tled by a very rapid and heavy cannonading
but a short distance to our left the
musketry fire was quite distinctly heard also.
The fireing continued until dark, we were in
harness expecting orders to move every moment.
Pleasant and warm.
